About Our Destination

Activity Level
This trip requires mobility without the use of a wheelchair or scooter, as guests must be able to walk to the safari vehicles, which can be up to ¼ mile away, walk on trails, climb a few stairs to their accommodations, climb into a safari vehicle, and be able to handle a few bumpy rides on rocky terrain. Scooters and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on safari. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Climate
The temperatures in South Africa in April and May will depend on our location. In Cape Town, it should be in the 60s Fahrenheit during the day (~15-20°C) and 40s Fahrenheit (~5-10°C) in the evening with some rainfall. In the Sabi Sabi Private Reserve, it should be in the high 70s Fahrenheit (~23-25°C) during the day and 40s Fahrenheit (~5-10°C) in the early morning and evening—so packing gloves, scarves, knitted caps, and insulated jackets for the morning and evening game drives will be key. And in Johannesburg, it should be in the 70s Fahrenheit (~20-25°C) during the day and in the 40s Fahrenheit (~5-10°C) in the evenings.
Currency
South Africa uses the South African Rand (ZAR); however, the US dollar is also accepted in some shops in small denominations ($1, $5, and $10). For updated exchange rates, please click here.
The amount of cash you bring is at your discretion. Please keep in mind that most establishments (outside of some markets) take credit cards, so a great deal of cash is not necessary. In addition, ATM machines are available; however, your bank will likely charge you a foreign transaction fee, so please check with them prior to leaving your hometown. Most ATMs will accept Visa and Mastercard international credit cards, paying out in local currency.
Languages
English is widely spoken in South Africa. It is one of the 11 official languages in South Africa, including Zulu, Xhosa, and Afrikaans.

A valid passport is required for entry into Africa and should be kept on your person or in the hotel safe deposit box. Your passport must be valid 6 months after travel. All visitors to Africa are required to have a minimum of two blank pages in their passport book that are lying side by side when the passport is open, for room to place their entry stamp. If there is insufficient space in the passport, entry into the country will be denied.
US citizens entering South Africa are not required to have visa. If you are not a US citizen, please check with both your country’s consulate and the consulates of the countries you will be visiting to make sure have all documentation you need to go on this trip.
Special Occasions
If you have any celebrations and birthdays during the trip that you have not already advised your travel consultant about, please let us know of this information as soon as possible, but no less than 90 days prior to the trip.
Travel Insurance
Olivia recommends that you purchase a travel protection plan to protect yourself and your trip investment. Now more than ever, it’s important to think about the unexpected. We recommend you purchase the travel protection within 15 days of your initial invoice date to receive the most comprehensive coverage, but it is never too late. Consider travel protection for trip cancellation, delay, and interruption; baggage delay; emergency medical services and emergency evacuation; and more.
Please refer to the Policy/Description of Coverage for a summary of the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the applicable Protection Plan.
For a travel insurance quote, more information or to purchase a protection plan, please call Olivia at 800-631-6277 and select option 1 for a travel consultant.
Vaccinations
Please check with your local Public Health Department or personal physician regarding immunization requirements for all countries on your itinerary. You may also check the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s website at: www.cdc.gov. Click on the Travelers’ Health section, then click on the Destinations link and choose your destination in the “For Travelers” pull-down menu.

Travel and arrival

Air travel
Where to fly into/out of
You will need to fly into the Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and out of the Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). We encourage all passengers to arrive a day early to avoid the stress of unexpected delays. A pre-trip one-night hotel package on April 20 with a meet-and-greet transfer is available to add-on. Please refer to the Vacation Stretcher tab for more information.
Airfare discounts
Save up to 15% on your airfare through our partner airlines. Please visit airfare discount page for the most up-to-date information.
Suggested arrival and departure times
Please plan to arrive anytime on April 21. Most flights from the United States and Europe arrive in the morning. Please note that check-in is at 2 pm. Your departing flight can be at any time on May 1.
In order to take advantage of the Olivia transfer from the Cape International Airport (CPT) to the Table Bay Hotel, your flight should be scheduled to arrive in Cape Town on April 21 and depart out of Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) at any time on May 1. Transfers are not included for any flights arriving or departing on other dates.
We encourage you to contact the airlines directly to confirm your flights, baggage allowance, and seat assignments prior to departure.
Luggage allowances
Your luggage should not weigh more than 44 lbs. We suggest that, if possible, you use a soft-sided duffle bag (with or without wheels), because this type of bag is much easier to load onto small planes. The maximum luggage size should not exceed 16 inches x 12 inches x 24 inches.
You can bring a carry-on that weighs 11 lbs or less and can fit under the seat in front you.
Since the program begins in Cape Town and ends in Johannesburg, you will not be able to store excess luggage.
Transfers
Your Micato staff will meet and greet you at the airport, in the arrivals hall, and bring you to the Table Bay Hotel, where you are preregistered for check-in. Should you have any queries, your Micato Safaris Concierge staff will be at their desk in the lobby to answer all your questions.

During your trip

Electricity
The voltage is 230 volts and 50 cycles. The plugs are shaped differently than in America and most parts of Europe. You will need 3-prong round adapters. We suggest you travel with a set of international adapter plugs as well as a voltage converter. Most camera battery and computer chargers have the 110/220/230-V converters built in, but double check this before plugging in this equipment without a voltage converter. With the proper adapters, you can easily recharge your batteries at all of the accommodations. Please note that most hotels have a 110-V socket. Please see the below example of a wall electrical outlet and an adapter for South Africa.
Connectivity: Email, Internet, and Telephone
Complimentary wifi is available at hotels and the safari lodge. The wifi works best in the public areas but is not always dependable.
All hotels and the safari lodge have readily available phones. Mobile phones work in most areas you will be traveling through. To avoid big international roaming charges, we suggest you check with your carrier about cell phone service in South Africa and any international plans that may be available to you. Complete information about emergency contact information will be available in your final documents, which will be emailed to you 3-4 weeks in advance of the trip.
Gratuities
All gratuities to drivers, guides, Safari Ranger and Tracker, waitstaff, housekeeping, and Micato Safari Director are included. If you received exceptional service from someone, you are welcome to give an additional gratuity. If you take an optional excursion, you may want to tip your driver and guide.
Laundry Services
Laundry, pressing, and dry-cleaning services are available at all hotels and safari lodge for a fee. No self-serve laundry is available.
Medical Services
South Africa is a global leader in many medical disciplines. In fact, doctors trained in South Africa are sought after all over the world, so this should give an indication of the standard of medical care available. All areas we will be in have readily available medical services. While in the bush on safari, there are doctors on call to treat travel-related and common ailments. Medical treatment is available for a fee.
Smoking Policy
Please refrain from smoking in safari vehicles and other enclosed places where it may affect others. All hotel rooms and safari lodge rooms are nonsmoking.
Solo Travlers
Feel free to meet other solos and travelers online the forum we have set up for guest going on Olivia’s Wonders of South Africa & Safari Adventure.
Specific Needs—Medical, Mobility, Dietary, and Otherwise
This trip requires mobility without the use of a wheelchair or scooter, as many of the tours involve some walking and climbing steps. Guests must be able to walk uphill, downhill, and on uneven surfaces and must be able to walk stairs on a daily basis without assistance. Though portable wheelchairs and travel scooters can be collapsed and stored on the bus, we cannot guarantee that all hotels and gaming lodges are accessible. If you have a manual chair or a scooter, you must be traveling with someone who can assist you. If you do have limited mobility, you are required to travel with someone who can assist you.
If you have specific dietary restrictions, please ensure that we have this information as soon as possible. If we do not have your most up-to-date dietary needs, we may not be able to accommodate you.
If you have special medical or dietary needs, please advise us at the time of booking, or contact Olivia Guest Services at guestservices@olivia.com if you have not notified us of your dietary needs.

Transfers to the Airport
After the trip, you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight home on May 1.
